Different Energy Sources

We require a variety of energy sources to work and live. They include wind, solar and geothermal as well as biomass sources. These sources are not only the primary source of electricity, but they can also be used to heat and transport. These energy sources emit greenhouse gases when burned to generate electricity. This results in the need for more sustainable energy sources.

Fossil fuels are the most well-known type of energy. They include oil, coal and natural gas. They were formed thousands of years ago, when prehistoric animals and plants died and were then buried under layers of sedimentary rocks. Under the right conditions these fossil fuels gradually transformed into carbon-rich compounds which, when ignited, produce energy. These fossil fuels won’t be renewable as they will run dry in our lifetimes or in a variety of lives.

Renewable energy sources are replenished continuously. The primary renewable energy source is sunlight, which produces light and heat. We use it to power our homes as well as for businesses and automobiles. Wind is a different renewable energy source, which produces electricity by spinning turbines. We have been using it since people first discovered how to harvest the wind for millennia. We utilize biological processes to produce an ethanol (a alcohol-like substance that is clear and transparent that can be used as fuel) from the waste of crops and other materials.

Hydropower is the largest renewable energy source in the US, but biofuels and wind are likely to take over. Hydropower relies on nature’s water cycle to harness the power of swiftly flowing water, which is then used to generate electricity.
